November 23rd 7:00 pm (No December meeting) Presidents Corner Good news, the canopy project is being completed. Craig has graciously donated a bunch of fencing poles that we needed as posts for the canopy. Frank and Brad are just waiting for decent weather to install the 18'x40' cover over the pit area. Please contact either fellow to help out if you're available this Friday / Saturday. I will be available Friday afternoon to help myself. We can use all the muscle power we can get from the club. I'm excited to see this canopy go up in time for our fun fly events coming up this year. Another update is the runway maintenance. Lots of club members are expressing frustration over the water pooling on the west end of the runway. Rod Madison and I have been discussing solutions for that problem. It's no big secret that the west end is a low lying area that allows rainwater to pool up for days after a storm. The big question is how to improve drainage to that area in the most cost effective manner. Rod's expert opinion is that aeration and sanding alone will not be enough to solve the drainage problem. We must bring that low lying area up to level, so that water will spread to the side of the runway and into the farm. Rod suggests that we add a loam base to the low areas to bring them up to level, then re-seed the lawn. Hopefully, he can make it to next club meeting to detail us on the process and give some cost estimates. Club Auction at the next club meeting. Remember that Wayne graciously donated the Futaba 10C FASST radio that he won from the raffle last month. We will hold a special auction for the radio at the meeting next week. Wayne would like to see the proceeds go to field upgrades. He also requests that only club members in good standing can participate in the auction. Anyway, bring your checkbook or cash to the meeting and make it a lively get together. Pat will be the Auctioneer. A final note. Wayne's spirit of giving has become contagious. I have a brand new Saito 72 4c laying around that I don't have any uses for. It should be perfect power for your next 40 size sport plane. I will donate the motor to the club to put up for auction at the April meeting. Hope this will trigger another good turn out and add some cash to the coffers. See you then. Khoi Tran Are you guys geting tired of paying $7 for NGK CM6 spark plugs? If so, stand back and be amazed... I found http://www.boats.net web site through RCU where you can get genuine ngk plugs for less than $2 each. These plugs are replacements for DA, DLE gassers. I've just bought 20 plugs to last me for years. Check it out! Khoi Tran WITH THE WEEKDAY WARRIORS This month we will be without C O'D's monthly column. He went under the blade and is recovering. I chatted with him on March 15th, he said the some other complications have kept him occupied. Before his scheduled hospital visit we had discussed the lack of good flying weather during the week days. I would expect that Chuck will back in the air before the month is out and we will be able to read a "first hand account" of that return. To Chuck, "Best wishes for a speedy recovery and rising air". Doug McWha Photos Field Maintenance Water pools are just like a swimming pool or bathtub water has no where to go and is trapped so it pools. When the water builds faster than it can drain it will pool. The reason they build roadways with a crown in them is so the water will drain to each side and run down a gutter and through drains away from the road. Our filed is draining to that point as well as others on the field when we have to more rain compared to how much the field can drain. Aeration helps only the top 2 to 3 inches where the grass roots are to break up the soil that gets compacted to help the roots be in a more porous soil condition which is good for the health of the turf. Fields like sports fields that are professionally installed are installed in a sand base. These type of fields require almost constant watering and fertilizing just like a golf green. We do not have that type of base under our field we have a clay based soil under our field that overtime gets compacted and acts more like a paved surface than a sand based well drained golf green or professional sports field so what you get is pooling. The low spots in the field if they were leveled would help tremendously for the pooling problem and sand would not be what you would use to do the leveling, however a sand loam organic material should be used and sanding the field would be done after the leveling over all of the field to start building a more porous soil condition for the health of the turf. To sum up this correspondence aeration is to aid the health of the turf with some aid to drainage, leveling the field is for the water pooling on the field, and regular maintenance, over time, and done properly will aid both. However keep in mind to have a perfect well drained field it first starts with the total underlayment of the correct soil. After turf has been installed in a clay soil it takes much time and maintenance to get it like a golf green and keep it in that condition.
