January

Hi All,
I would like to welcome you all to a new year of fun in this hobby of RC flying.
The temperatures outside have been perfect for staying indoors, and building models!
I am working on my third for the winter months!

I want you all to our January meeting, to catch up with each other, meet new members, and where we will plan for this years activities! I hope to see you there.

February

Hey All,
It’s February! The rain is cold, the mud is brown, and the fire is warm! I have driven out to the flying field a couple times just to see if it is above the water! Happy to report that mostly it is!
I guess we can be thankful that our local reservoirs are not forcing evacuations of our city!

I have been building another plane, this one a slow mover, a Fokker Eindecker E-III. I must admit that it’s the ugliest plane I’ve ever owned, but it is growing on me. I think the Ugly Sticks are based on this plane, and most know how I feel about those great flying, ugly airplanes!

Tuesday, the 21st is our next meeting. We will be buying pizza for all in attendance. We also would like to have all dues for the year paid by then. Hope to see some show and tell planes!
See you then!

Roger Dahl

March

Hey All,
The time has changed to daylight savings, and we are hoping the weather will soon change to “saving us from the rain”!
I would like to say thank you to Mickey Cohen for putting together our club newsletter each month!
I would like to offer a few airline jokes on his behalf! I hope he doesn’t mind!

A plane was taking off from Kennedy Airport. After it reached a comfortable cruising altitude, the captain made an announcement over the intercom, “Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. Welcome to Flight Number 293, nonstop from New York to Los Angeles. The weather ahead is good and, therefore, we should have a smooth and uneventful flight. Now sit back and relax… OH, MY GOD!” Silence followed, and after a few minutes, the captain came back on the intercom and said, “Ladies and Gentlemen, I am so sorry if I scared you earlier. While I was talking to you, the flight attendant accidentally spilled a cup of hot coffee in my lap. You should see the front of my pants!” A passenger in Coach yelled, “That’s nothing. You should see the back of mine!”

After a real crusher of a landing in Phoenix, the attendant came on with, “Ladies and Gentlemen, please remain in your seats until Capt. Crash and the Crew have brought the aircraft to a screeching halt against the gate. And, once the tire smoke has cleared and the warning bells are silenced, we’ll open the door and you can pick your way through the wreckage to the terminal.”

“Weather at our destination is 50 degrees with some broken clouds, but we’ll try to have them fixed before we arrive. Thank you, and remember, if flying is so safe, why do they call the airport a “terminal”!
Stay Safe,
Rog

April

Hi All,

The wet weather seems to be putting up a fight, but I have faith that we will see more sun soon!

I want to say thanks to Jim Corbett, who has outmaneuvered the weather to mow the field for the first time this year, and as we get some more dry weather, and after a work day, we should be in great shape for our first fly-in on Memorial Day! Also thanks to Al Barrington, who brought out his gravel road fixer upper, and spent some time fixing the road!

I look forward to a good year at the flying field!

Stay safe,
Rog

May

Hey all you cabin fever sufferers,

I have it on good authority that the winter wetness is subsiding!
Some, myself included, have been out to the flying field to get the first flights on our field, and thanks to the efforts of a few key members, it is now possible!
That bright orb in the sky that sometimes peeks out between the clouds is fixing to make “Monthly appearances” before you know it!

I am looking forward to our first fly-in of the year, coming up on Memorial Day, May 29th. This will be a good time to show off your latest creation(s), and we are welcoming any and all pilots to come together to meet with other flyers
The club will be cooking burgers, and hotdogs, and invite all who can to bring “accessory food” to go along! Maybe we can even talk Jeff Lutz into bringing his wonderful beans!

I have purchased a table space for the Creswell swap meet, and am looking for donations for the swap meet. If you have some  RC “stuff” that you have climbed over long enough, give me a call, I’ll pick it up, and maybe we can turn it back into some cash for our club kitty.

See you soon!

June

Hey All,
Greetings from Kailua-Kona, on the Big Island!
I have been here since the 30th, and plan on being back in Oregon on the 19th.
It seems that the local rc club has let the FAA completely scare them out of flying rc planes! I tried to contact the President to explain the latest lawsuit which has ripped the legal hands of the FAA away from model aircraft, but I was unable to contact him.
I understand the Oregon weather has been keeping things green, (he said with a grin), but don’t lose hope! I’ll bring some sun and warmth home with me!
We will plan for our next event, our Warbird and Fun fly, at our club meeting this month.
It is scheduled for July 4th, and I hope it goes as well as our Memorial Day fun fly was.
It occurred to me that we had no crashes at our fun fly last month!
That had to be a First!
Stay safe out there, and come out early for some flying, and dinner! We will fire up the grill around 6:00 and char some burgers and hot dogs!

Aloha!
Rog

July

Hi All,
It’s suddenly the middle of July! I don’t know about you, but this part of the year always flies by!
Thanks to all who helped out for our July 4 Warbird fly in! I think we had a good time!
I hope to see you all for our next meeting out at the field, where I expect to hear about our upcoming Monsterfest in August! Let’s all pull together to make it a fun event!
See you soon!
Rog

August

Hey All,

It’s Monsterfest time! We had a small work party come out, and the field is ready for the event.
I hope you all come out and participate in one way or another to make this event the best we have had!
It should be a great time, and I ordered some cloud cover, so we shouldn’t cook in the August sun!
Just a reminder, that if you have some portable chairs, perhaps you can bring them, so we don’t run out of places to sit!

See you soon!

September

Hey All,
It’s turning to Fall, and the leaves are going to soon be doing just that! The new grass is growing fine on our runway, and I’m thankful for another season!
Jeff Lutz has kicked off a winter challenge to build a kit, and others are jumping on the “kitwagon”! Good to see!
We will be needing to vote for club members, so if you would like to make a nomination, make it known at our next meeting!
See you at the meeting!

ERCA Minutes for June 2017

The meeting began at 7:00 at the field. Seventeen members were present. Jeff read the Treasurer’s report, which was approved. Dave read the “amended” May minutes, were approved. The original minutes failed to mention that Geral Yarbrough was voted in as a new member at the May meeting.

-Jim mentioned a need to buy fertilizer for the field. Members also discussed sanding the field, but decided not to lay down sand until after the Monster Fest in August.
-A discussion about replacing the roll-out tarp roof ended with a decision to take no action until the tarp actually needs to be replaced.
-Frank stated that he heard from Pat that planning for the Monster Fest is going slowly, and that there is a lack of sponsors for the event.
Under New Business:
-Members voted to set the landing fee for the Warbird event at $10. Food and soft drinks will be available from 9-to-4, and there are a number of awards to be given out.
-Al mentioned that raffle tickets are available to go toward the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
-Jim gave an update on a proposed underground watering system, stating that it was not practical due to the expense to install electricity.
-The members discussed whether to limit the number of times that “guests” could fly at the field each year. Geral suggested that there be a sign-in sheet for guests.
-After discussion, it was agreed that all members should display their membership cards when at the field, as per our by-laws, to help avoid confusion about non-members using the field. Mickey stated that he would make a sign for the field to remind members to display their cards.
Finally, Dave Sharpe was introduced as a guest, then voted in as a member. Dave is a former member of the South Lane RC club.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 p.m.

August 2017 ERCA Meeting Minutes:
The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. at the flying field. There were 17 members present. Jeff read the Treasurer’s Report, which was approved. Dave read the minutes from the July meeting, which were approved.
Two new guests were introduced – Roger introduced Scott Colling, and Dave Carlstrom introduced Gerald Kessering.
Old Business:
Feedback on the Monster Fest included that there was a mishap, with 2 aircraft lost; Brad acknowledged that Super Tim was a big hit at the event, and is a great ambassador for the hobby; it was also mentioned that the Food Cart on Saturday was very successful, and that the people who ran it want to be at the event for all 3 days next year. Other comments included that overall, the event was more fun this year, with more flying done by local club members.
Scott suggested that for future events, it would be a good idea to set up an “information” table manned by veteran hobbyists to either do seminars or at least be able to answer basic questions from “newcomers” to the hobby. His suggestion was well received by club members.
New Business:
Jim proposed that the club consider plowing up and disking the flying field while the equipment is available to do it, with rolling and seeding to follow, explaining that wild grasses are starting to take over parts of the field. Discussion followed, and a motion was then made and approved to allow up to $1,500 for the cost of plowing, grading, and seeding the field right after the Labor Day Fly-In event.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:58 p.m.

Under Old Business:
-Between August 19th and September 16th, the flying field was plowed up, disked, rolled, seeded, and rolled again. Jim announced that the main field will be closed until further notice, allowing the new grass to properly grow. The geotex section will remain open. Frank stated that he would check with the Creswell club to see if we can temporarily fly at their field, and check to see whether there would be any cost for flying privileges.
Under New Business:
-Jeff suggested we compensate new members for at least some of next year’s dues because of the field closure right after they joined the club. Several members agreed that there should be some compensation.
-Frank reiterated that Jeff’s idea to have a spring event to promote the building of model aircraft was a good one, and that we should follow up on that idea.
-There was considerable discussion about how to increase membership and bring in “new blood” amongst club officers to add enthusiasm and energy to club activities. For example, concern was expressed that the club is not reaching out individually to new members.
Under Show & Tell, Jeff brought in his “new build” to show the progress he’s making on his project.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 p.m.

-Members discussed ways to bring in new club members and new club officers.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:12 p.m.

I suspect that I am not alone in that I sorely missed being able to fly during those last couple of months of the flying season on our main field while it was being resurfaced. I do not take for granted the privilege we have of a local RC club, a local field in a nice setting in which to practice our hobby. When the next season roles around, I will take full advantage of “getting back in the air” and enjoying the pure pleasure of flying my warbirds.

Along with the fun of flying comes the responsibility of helping the club any way we can. For some of us, that may mean helping maintain the field…for others, participating in events, and for others, taking leadership positions. I do know that we can all do something — whatever our schedules and our daily lives allow. I’m encouraging all of us — myself included — to get out there and have fun come next spring, but also to do whatever we can to grow the club and the sport.

Happy Flying,

Dave

This coming weekend is the Monster Fest and I plan to attend. I will have hamburgers and hotdogs to BBQ on Friday so stop by and see what kind of action is happening even if you don’t feel like flying. Roger has been doing an excellent job of keeping money coming into the treasury by selling donated planes. If you see him at the field thank him for his efforts. Also Jim Corbett is doing a dandy job of keeping the field looking good along with the helpof many volunteers. The build on the Phaeton 90 continues and this month saw both wings get framed up. Pictures are included for those following the build.

An idea was posed that I for one thought would be fun. During the winter any club member that likes to build kit planes builds their choice of plane. The following season a day is designated and those of us who have built a plane bring it to the field for the maiden flight. Even if your build is not complete you still bring it that day just to show off your build talents. I spoke with a few club members last Saturday at the field nd they seemed somewhat interested in the idea. This event would also make for some nice show and tell items to bring to meetings thru the winter and next spring. Stay tuned for more info on this idea in next months newsletter.

Sincerely, Jeff Lutz Treasurer

Monsterfest has come and gone, the club profited $592.03 after all was said and done. I attended the first 2 days of the event and had a great time. Thanks go out to Pat, Brad and Co, for taking on the oversight of the event. Well done guys it was a profitable endeavor. Not much visually appealing has happened on the Biplane build this month. Installing servo’s and mounts plus the electronics have taken up most of my free time amid other projects. I did get a pilot installed.

See you at the meeting on the 19th at Abby’s River Road
Sincerely, Jeff Lutz, Treasurer

Quadrocpter and Multi-Rotor Safety

It is very important that you learn the techniques of the ways to fly the drones safely in your yard or house without endangering spectators or pets.  Be careful to following all the local laws and take safety precautions when using the devices.
A Quadrocopter or Multi-Rotor is for 14 years and older.
You should have sufficient knowledge about the control of a model aircraft, if you don’t, please contact someone with experience.
Remember In general, model aircraft are not covered by a standard liability insurance. The appropriate (model aircraft) liability insurance should be obtained.
Do not take risks! Your own safety and that of your environment depend on the good behavior of the pilot. Always maintain a safe distance from people, animals and objects. Improper operation can cause serious injury and property damage! Never fly towards viewers and avoid flying over spectators.
Keep in mind that viewers could get close to the Quadrocopter Multi-Rotor, without being aware of potential dangers.
Only fly in sight of you or a spotter, In the case of manual control, you must be able to see the position and attitude.
Never rely 100% on functions such as GPS, compass, or altitude control. You must always be able to take manual control of the Quadrocopter Multi-Rotor.
Switch off the motors in case of a crash or failure.
Always turn off the Quadrocopter Multi-Rotor first and disconnect the flight battery before turning off the transmitter.
Fly Safe, Have Fun.
Dwayne

FLYING SAFETY

We are starting another summer flying season and we need to think about flying with more people than when we caught a few good days this winter. We need to remember to communicate with our fellow fliers about what we are doing. Do not make high energy passes towards the pits or spectators.

Announce or pass along.

Entering the runway.
Taking off.
Making a low pass.
Dead stick landing.
Landing.
On the runway.

Always takeoff, fly and land in the same direction as the other flyers in the air. It is usually a left-handed pattern unless the wind is from the west.

Also we will be mowing and watering the runway. Please do not fly when we are mowing, and the mowing will go much faster if we get both mowers going. If you fly when the sprinklers are out keep your aircraft away from the water lines, they are damaged easily by spinning props.

Flying Safety

We are well into this flying season. Dust off some of those planes back in the hanger. Install new batteries check the control surfaces and covering, and ready the for a fun day.
Remember that the fire danger is very high and any mishap has a potential for a fire. Make sure that our club Fire Cart is out on the flight line. Remember the airfield is a nonsmoking area. Smoking IN your vehicle only. Emphasis on the word IN.
Remember, you’re not out there by yourself we need to communicate with our fellow fliers about what we are doing. Do not make high energy passes towards the pits or spectators. Also we have a North wind this time of year, make sure you give yourself plenty of room when you turn to final approach. If your headed toward the pits – Abort.

Announce or pass along.
1) Entering runway.
2) Taking off.
3) Making a low pass
4) Dead stick landing.
5) Landing.
6) On the runway.

Always takeoff, fly, and land in the same direction as the other flyers in the air. It is usually a left-handed pattern unless the wind is from the West.

If you are the first one at the field, open the club house.
That is where the first aid kit and fire extinguisher are
